Health Benefits of Exotic Fruits

Carambola, guarana, goji or pitaya, all these names of exotic fruits are still poorly known, although
their often very colorful aspect attracts the eye. Professor Kurt Hostettmann, a professor of chemistry and a former researcher at the University of Geneva, has just devoted a book * to their therapeutic virtues ... or their dangers. What to guide the potential consumers in their choices.

Known as "the most nutritious and antioxidant fruit in the world" or "the most powerful anti-aging food", goji has recently made its appearance in Europe. These orange red berries grow mainly in China and they are generally dried before being exported (they must be put in yoghurt or let them infuse before consuming them). Numerous studies have proved their interest in health. They show a marked decrease in fatigue, sleep problems and dizziness in the elderly. Others report an improvement in mental performance, digestion and cutaneous dryness, as well as a preventive effect on cataract and age-related macular degeneration.

Watch out for abuse

The starfruit is also native to Asia even though this plant is now grown in many areas. This yellow fruit, which can reach 20 cm long, is made up of 5 welded carpels whose section forms a star. Many therapeutic virtues are attributed to him, in particular that of lowering blood sugar in diabetics. But nothing is proved. On the other hand, people suffering from kidney failure must avoid its consumption. Station, as they are found in fruit salads.

Guarana, it grows naturally in the Brazilian Amazon. It belongs to the same family as litchi. The appearance of this fruit is rather strange: when it is ripe, the reddish bark breaks and reveals a white nucleus marked with a black protuberance that evokes the pupil of the eye. Traditionally, the seeds are dried, roasted and pulverized. Very rich in caffeine - up to 3.5 times more than coffee beans - they serve to prepare drinks. Guarana is therefore indicated against fatigue, lack of memory and also as a help to lose weight. But be careful not to abuse it.

Finally, the pitaya is remarkable from a distance because of its bright pink color. Also called "fruit of the dragon", it is still little present in our markets, except during the holidays. But in Asia they are everywhere. Its white flesh dotted with small black seeds is known for its digestive properties. Studies have shown that it has a preventive effect against gout and excess sugar in the blood. In addition, this fruit is low in calories.
