Number two, you are crowding out bad calories and foods from your meals and snacks. If you eat an apple before each meal, you're guarenteed to not eat as much of that meal. The apple crowds out the bad calories with good calories... and less calories. This enables one to eat your favorite foods without starving.

Number three, the fiber in the apples helps improve the efficiency in your digestive tract. Your systems will basically clear out all the foods you eat quicker, while retaining more of their useful nutrients. So you get the left over bad stuff from these foods out of your body faster so they don't have a chance to rot and ferment in your intestines which leads to many problems.
